Super Typhoon Yolanda Recap

The worst over for the Philippines as Super Typhoon Yolanda (international code: Haiyan) came earlier than expected and exited faster than expected. The rapid acceleration of super typhoon helped minimize what could have been catastrophic damages in several areas in the country. The typhoon did extensive damage but it was mostly limited to areas where it made landfall. Early preparations were also a key in reducing the of life caused by the Category 5 typhoon.

Super Typhoon Yolanda made 6 landfalls.  First in Guiuan, Samar at 4:40 am then it moved to Talosa, Leyte then to Daanbntayan, Cebu then to Bantayan Island then to Concepcion, Ilo-Ilo then to Busuanga, Palawan.  There was a total blackout in the Visayas at the height of the storm.  Power was restored by late afternoon in some areas while many affected areas have no electricity as of the moment.  Telecommunications was also greatly affected as some areas are still hard to reach via mobile phone as of the moment. Thirteen airports suspended operations yesterday, cancelling 118 domestic flights. Based on the report of the NDRRMC, a total of 3,398 passengers, 76 sea vessels, 8 motorized bancas, and 743 rolling cargoes are stranded in the different ports of the country.  There were 800,000 evacuees in the 37 provinces affected by the typhoon.

As of 7 am, Super Typhoon Yolanda was tracked at Talosa, Leyte after making landfall at Guiuan, Eastern Samar at 4:40 a.m. at dawn today. The typhoon accelerated and it arrived earlier than forecasted.

The typhoon is currently crossing the Leyte Island.  It is expected to pass through Northern Cebu then Panay (Ilo-ilo, Aklan, Capiz), Romblon, Semirara Island, Southern Mindoro, then Busuanga. Yolanda (Haiyan) is expected to be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday afternoon.

It is already raining hard in Cebu and you can feel the winds already.  Everyone in the areas with Storm Signals are advised to be on alert for possible flashfloods, landslides, and destruction of property. Super Typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda is strongest typhoon since Typhoon Tip (Warling) in 1979.   Based on Typhoon2000.ph analysis, Yolanda packs winds up to 315 kph near the center although PAGASA’s analysis have it at 245 kph with gustiness up to 275 kph.  Nevertheless, those winds speeds are unheard of by this current generation as there was no typhoon in recent memory with those wind speeds and making landfall somewhere in the country.

Super Typhoon Yolanda Update 4: More areas under Signal No. 4; Bantayan and Northern Cebu towns included

In their  November 7, 2013 11 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA raised Public Storm Warning Signal No.4 in many areas in the Visayas. These towns and provinces are the most likely areas that Super Typhoon Yolanda (international code: Haiyan) will pass through before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Added in the list of threatened areas are Bantayan Island and the extreme Northern Cebu Towns like San Remigio, Daanbantayan, and Bogo. If the typhoon will not change course, it will also affect Boracay Island which one of the top tourist destinations in the country.

Metro Cebu is still under signal No.3 while the southern towns of Cebu are under Signal No. 2. Heavy to intense rainfall is expected in the 600 km diameter of the Category 5 typhoon. It started to rain just before midnight in Cebu City and the rains are expected to continue until tomorrow afternoon.

Storm Track

If the storm track forecast of weather.com.ph is correct, the typhoon will make landfall in Leyte then move towards the Northern tip of Cebu Island, then towards the Eastern portion of Panay before exiting towards the West Philippine Sea. Residents living within 200 kilometers from the expected path of the typhoon are strongly advised to prepare and take all necessary precautions to avoid the loss of life. Residents need to constantly monitor the situation through AM Radio, TV, Internet, and they to coordinate with their local governments when it comes to evacuation and emergency procedures.

Super Typhoon Yolanda Update No.3: Signal No.4 in 5 areas; Cebu City under Signal No. 3

In PAGASA‘s latest weather bulletin, 5 areas are declared under Public Storm Warning Signal No. 4. Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Southern, and Biliran could experience winds higher than 185 kph in the next few hours. Signal No.3 was declared in 8 areas including Cebu City in weather bulletin issued at 5:00 pm today.

At the time of the release of this Severe Weather Bulletin, Cebu City had cloudy skies with little to no rainfall.  Traffic was moving fast because there were less vehicles in the road as many people opted to stay home. Some shopping centers were still packed with shoppers but many establishments decided to close down early so that their employees can go home and prepare for the strong typhoon.  Rains started to fall at around 7:20 pm in Cebu City.

Cebuanos are strongly advised to heed the warning signals of PAGASA even if they are experiencing relatively calm weather. Super Tyhoon Yolanda (International code: Haiyan) is the strongest typhoon in the world this year and people should not take that fact for granted. Winds of over 200 kph could uproot trees and cause catastrophic damage in structures. The brunt the typhoon will only arrive tomorrow and residents are advised not to go out of their houses unless it is very important.  People in living unsafe structures or in landslide or flashflood-prone areas are advised to go to designated evacuation centers or seek shelter with relatives in safer areas. Signal No.3 is declared as a precaution since PAGASA’s weather bulletin only comes once every six hours.

As of 6 pm, Super Typhoon Yolanda is tracked at 453 km Southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.  It is moving West Northwest at a speed of 37 kph.  It is expected to make landfall somewhere between Samar and Leyte before noontime tomorrow.

In PAGASA’s 11 am weather bulletin, Public Storm Warning Signal No. 3 is declared in Eastern Samar, Samar,  Leyte, Southern Leyte, Siargao Island and Dinagat Province. Cebu and Bohol are under signal No.2.  Residents under Public storm signals are advised to watch out for possible floods and landslides. Storm surges could also happen in coastal areas where waves could be as high as 7 meters.

Yolanda is the strongest typhoon to hit the  country this year and based on its forecasted track, it will affect several provinces in the country. Tomorrow it will cross Leyte and Samar.  There is a possibility it will graze the Northern part of Cebu (Bogo, Bantayan Island and Camotes residents will need to prepare) before the super typhoon moves to Panay Island.  It will pass by the vicinity of Coron Island before moving out of the country.

Super Typhoon Yolanda Update 1: PAGASA issues Public Storm Warnings

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has finally issued Public Storm Warnings for Super Typhoon Yolanda (international code: Haiyan) as it entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Signal No.2 is 8 areas in the country.  The Bicol Region, the whole Visayas, and parts of Mindanao are placed under signal No.1.

Cebu has cloudy skies and occasional rains will be experienced throughout the day which is brought by the typhoon. The island is under Public Storm Warning Signal No.1. The rains could intensify starting this evening. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions especially those living in Northern Cebu and the smaller islands like Bantayan and Camotes.

As of 7 a.m. the super typhoon is currently tracked at 745 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao Del Sur.  It is  moving West Northwest at 35 kph. According typhoon2000.ph, it is now a Category 5 typhoon with winds over 280 kph near the center.  The typhoon will likely make landfall tomorrow around noontime in the Southern tip of Samar and the Northern tip of Leyte.

Typhoon Watch: Haiyan (Yolanda) now a Super Typhoon

Typhoon Haiyan has intensified further and now is classified as a super typhoon.  Super Typhoon Haiyan now has Maximum Sustained Winds of 250 kph near the center.   It is now making its way to the Republic of Palau. In a few hours, it will enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and it will be locally known as Yolanda.  Haiyan is quickly moving at 41 kph in a west to west-northwest direction.  Super Yolanda is expected to make landfall near Guiuan, Samar before noontime on Friday, November 8.

3-Day Forecast:

Thursday Afternoon: Haiyan strengthens further to be a Category 5 Typhoon with winds over 270 kph. It will be around 765 Km east southeast of Tacloban, Leyte.

Friday Afternoon: It will be in the area of Tacloban and Northern Towns of Leyte and will weaken a little after making landfall in the Southern tip of Samar.

Saturday Afternoon: It will be in the West Philippine Sea packing winds of 205 kph.
