Coach Olsen Racela has revealed to media the Energen Pilipinas Under-16 Youth Team that will represent the county in the Fiba Asia U16 tournament in Nha Trang City, Vietnam. The team will miss many players who were instrumental in sweeping the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) U16 championship in Banting City, Malaysia last August due to school commitments.
Notably absent is big man Arvin Tolentino of San Beda. Some of the regulars though are back for an another tour of duty led by SHS-AdC Magi Eagles guard Henry Asilum and ex-Magi Eagle Rev Diputado (San Beda). Also back are NU’s Hubert Cani, Xavier’s Kyles Lao, Reedley’s Jay Javellosa, Ateneo’s Earl Murphy, and Arellano center Daryl Pascual.
Reinforcing them are are Tomas Ramos (Ateneo), J-Jay Alejandro (Mapua), Prince Rivero (National University), Andrei Caracut (San Beda), Isaac Go (Xavier), Nic Dalafu (Victory Christian International) and Jordan Heading (Morrison High School).
The Energen Pilipinas Under-16 Youth Team is expected to win comfortably their group assignments as they battle Southeast Asian rivals Indonesia (Oct. 19) and host Vietnam (Oct. 20). The bigger matches will be in the second round where the Asian powerhouses meet and try to secure one of two slots to the 2012 Fiba U17 World Championship.
The national youth team hopes to surpass the 4th place finish of the 2009 team that was starred by the likes of Kiefer Ravena, Mike Tolomia,Von Pessumal, and Jeron Teng.
