If you search for pictures of Cebu in Google, you will most likely see the Magellan’s Cross. The cross was planted by the explorer Ferdinand Magellan on the baptism of Raja Humabon and his wife in 1521. The Magellan’s Cross is located in Magallanes Street near the Cebu City Hall and the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.

When the Raja and his wife were baptized, Magellan gifted Queen Juana with a  Santo Niño, sculpture of Jesus as a child. In 1565, the Spanish conquistadors who came with Miguel Lopez de Legazpi found the  Santo Niño in wooden box. A church was built at the exact spot where the sculpture was found and it is now called the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.

A lot of people come to the church to visit and pray to  Senior Santo Niño. The peak month for visitors would be January since the feast day of the patron of Cebu is on every third Sunday of January.

To get to the Church and the Magellan’s Cross, you can ride a taxi cab from any point in the City. If prefer to ride a jeepney, just pick a route that passes by Magallanes Street. Just ask the jeepney driver and they will teach what jeepney you should ride.

If you visit Cebu, you have to check out these 2 sites. It would be odd to have a trip to Cebu without taking pictures in these places. For Cebuanos, you should at least have a picture in these places.

Sidetrip: You can go to La fortuna to buy some hopia and other favorite baked goodies.
