Cebu Milo BEST Passerelle: UV stuns SHS-AdC to bag Crown

26 Jul

Capitol Parish Gym, Cebu City – The University of the Visayas Baby Lancers will be Cebu’s representative in the regional championships in Roxas City for the Milo BEST Center Passerelle Tournament after beating rivals Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles in a thrilling final game, 56-53.  The winner of  the regional tournament will represent the Visayas in the National finals to be held in Cebu in December of this year.

It was the Magis Eagles who struck first outscoring the Baby Lancers 10-6 after the first period behind the efforts of Jed Colonia who outscored UV by himself with 7 points.  The second period was even as both teams scored 12 points. Andre Chua had 8 points for the Eagles while Denzel Sabroso had 6 points to lead the Lancers.  The score was 22-18 in favor of Ateneo de Cebu after the first 20 minutes of play. Then, everything went downhill for the favored Eagles.

The third quarter belonged to UV and John Clint Pacquibut as they totally overhauled the deficit by outscoring the Eagles 22-9. Pacquibut hit 3 three-point shots to stun the Magis Eagles-dominated crowd.  He made the long range shots in succession to shift the momentum to the green shirts. He finished with 15 points in 10 minutes.  UV led 40-31 entering the final period.

The final period started at a frenetic pace as the SHS-AdC team employed a vicious full court press that led to several UV turnovers and easy scores.  They started the period with a 10-0 blast to take back the lead.  Colonia had several steals and Andrew Velasco waxed hot as he scored 7 in the quarter.  Fatigue may have finally caught with the Magis Eagles as the Lancers were able to employ an effective press break.  The game was tied at 47-all going to the final 2 minutes. Ateneo had ball possession. Velasco missed his long range shot but Colonia was there to score the putback to give Ateneo its final lead at 49-47.  UV responded with a booming triple from Sabroso to give the Lancers a slim 50-49 lead.  Ateneo failed to capitalize on its opportunity as they gave up possessions and were forced to foul the Lancers.  Gonzaga, Zenarosa, and Sabroso had nerves of steel as they hit their free throws giving UV a 56-51 lead with less than 12 seconds left in the ball game.  Chua scored for SHS-AdC to make it a one possession game with less than 8 seconds left at 56-53.  UV quickly inbounded the ball but it was stolen by Velasco.  The ball ended up with Chen who had a good look for a 3-point attempt but the his attempt to send the game to overtime bounced off the cylinder and ended up in a UV player’s hands to end the championship game.

It was a major victory for UV as they rarely beat SHS-AdC in the Passerelle level. Sabroso and Pacquibut paced the Baby Lancers with 15 a piece. Eight other players scored for the victors. Chua, Colonia, and Velasco combined for 36 points to lead the losing team. It was a great championship match and the result will just fuel more fire to the budding UV-Ateneo rivalry in Cebu high school basketball.

Doctor-Patient Tragedy: Orthopedic Surgeon killed by wheelchair-bound Patient

24 Jul

Dr. Cris Cecil C. Abbu succumbed to two gunshot wounds after being shot by wheelchair-bound Wilfredo Sabonsolin inside the PT Center of the Sacred Heart Hospital at the Southwestern University Compound in Urgello, Cebu City.   He was hit in the arm and the chest. The fatal shot was the one that hit the left side of the doctor’s chest with the bullet piercing through his heart.  Dr. Abbu was rushed to the emergency room of the hospital but the doctors were not able to save him and he was declared dead at 10:30 a.m by attending physicians James Guardiaro and Ferdinand Kionisala. After shooting the victim, the assailant shot himself in the head. The bullet entered his left temple and exited in his right temple killing him on the spot while on his wheelchair.

Wilfredo Sabonsolin was a patient of Dr. Abbu  since 2010.  He was suffering from a spinal injury.  He was operated 4 times by the surgeon and the last operation was in December of last year.  The patient was confined to a wheelchair ever since the last operation.  The two meet at least twice a week for check up and therapy sessions.

Fatal Check up/ Therapy Day

Sabonsolin rode a taxicab and arrived at around 9:30 a.m. at the Southwestern University compound.  He proceeded to the PT Center at the back of the Sacred Heart Hospital accompanied by his helper Rene Tanelon.  Based on the investigations, the security guards of the SWU compound were not as strict in inspecting  his belongings because he has been a regular patient in the medical facility that is managed by the Aznar family. The patient was scheduled for a therapy at 9:45 a.m. According to his helper, when it was Sabonsolin’s turn, he was greeted by the orthopedic surgeon and asked how he was doing.  The patient answered that he can not walk.  The doctor tried to assure him that regular therapy will help him regain his ability to walk. Then, tragedy happened.

The patient suddenly pulled out a .380 caliber pistol from his sling bag.  His first shots misfired as the responding police investigators found two bullets on the floor in their initial investigation.  His next two shots hit the doctor in the right arm and the chest. One of the bullets also ricocheted to the ceiling of the clinic. The helper was stunned when he saw his employer shoot the doctor and he asked why did he do it.  Sabonsolin did not say a word then, the helper out of panic ran towards the exit because he was scared that the assailant would also shoot him. When he was outside the facility, he heard another gunshot.   It was the shot that claimed the life of the shooter. Three empty bullet casings were recovered on the scene of the crime.  The police is investigating the real motive of the crime and also if there were security lapses on the side of the hospital.

Dr. Cris Cecil Abbu is survived by his wife Dr. Amelia Escobar Abbu.  He earned his Doctor of Medicine and Bachelor of Laws degrees in SWU.  |He is connected with the hospital and has been a faculty member College of Medicine and College of Rehabilitative Sciences of the university for almost 20 years.

Bagyong Henry will continue to enhance the Southwest Moonsoon or Habagat bringing rains all over the country. Sea travel using small seacraft in the Eastern seaboard of the country is not advisable.  Residents of landslide-prone and flood-prone areas are advised to take necessary precautions as occasional rains are expected throughout the day specially in Southern Luzon and the Visayas region.

2014 Typhoon Season: Bagyong Henry accelerates; Signal No. 1 in 3 areas

20 Jul

Typhoon Henry (Matmo) is now packing wind speeds of 130 kph with gustiness reaching 160 kph.  The typhoon continues to move in a NW direction at 20 kph.  It is expected to make landfall in Taiwan Wednesday morning.  Henry has a potential to develop into a super typhoon that will have wind speeds over 200 kph.

Typhoon Henry (Matmo) storm track

PAGASA has issued Public Storm Signal Warning No.1 to the Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan Province including Babuyan Island, and Calayan Group of Islands. Residents in the storm warning areas and nearby provinces are advised to be on alert for possible landslides and flashfloods due to the big possibility of moderate to heavy thunderstorms in the eastern of the country.  As of 4:00 am today, Bagyong Henry was tracked to be 340 km Northeast of Virac, Catanduanes.  Fisherfolks in the eastern seaboard of the country are advised not to venture out.

Cebu Outlook: Typhoon Henry enhances the Southwest Moonsoon or Habagat bringing breezy conditions with cloudy skies and occasional rainshowers in Cebu and nearby islands including Mindanao.

2014 Typhoon Season: Henry Intensifies; Still not expected to make landfall in the Philippines

19 Jul

Bagyong Henry (International Code: Matmo) has intensified while trudging along the Philippine sea.  The weather disturbance now packs maximum sustained winds of 95 kph with gustiness reaching up to 120 kph. PAGASA tracked Tropical Storm Henry at the North Philippines Sea, 560 km East of Guiuan, Eastern Samar as of its 11 am update Saturday July 19, 2014.  Henry is currently moving at a slow pace of 9 kph in a NNW direction.

Active weather systems in the PAR

Based in the current storm track projections, Henry will further intensify and will become a full-fledged typhoon in the next couple of days. The weather system is moving very slow making it gain more strength as it spends more time in the sea. There is a good chance for Henry to become a super typhoon like what happened to Glenda when it made its landfall in China.

The PAGASA has not issued any storm warning signals yet but smaller sea vessels are advised to avoid venturing out to the ocean especially those in the eastern seaboard of the country. The whole country is expected to experience isolated rain showers and thunderstorms in the coming days due to Henry and its Trough. People living in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas are advised to take necessary precautions and prepare for possible evacuation.

World Headlines: Malaysian Airline flight shot down in Ukraine

18 Jul

A few months after a Malaysian Airline jet “vanished” in the air, another Malaysian Airline flight ended up in tragedy.  This time, Malaysian Airline flight MH17 was shot down in Ukraine killing all the 283 passengers and 15 crew members.  Flight MH17 was from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.  The jet was apparently brought down by a missile.  It was the third plane crash in that area of the war torn Ukraine.

Russia and Ukraine have traded accusations on who was responsible for shooting down the commercial jet.  There were 3 Filipinos among the victims of the crash. Over half of the passengers were Dutch nationals.  There were also 43 Malaysians, 12 Indonesians, 9 Britons, 4 Belgians, 4 Germans, and 1 New Zealander.  Authorities are still trying to find out the nationalities of 39 other fatalities.

AIDS community mourns

Many of the passengers were on their way to Melbourne, Australia to attend the 20th International Aids conference in Melbourne.  Some of the world’s leading AIDS researchers were thought to be in the tragic flight.  Australia has also already put their flags in half mast.

Who fired the missile?

Based on the news, the missile was fired from a Russian Buk launcher. The missiles fired from a Buk launcher could reach as high as 70,000 feet which is way higher than MH17’s altitude before the crash of about 30,000 feet.   This type of launcher is a sophisticated weaponry that will take years to master and this not the shoulder-type missile launcher. In the past couple of days, 2 Ukrainian military aircraft were shot down in this same area where the Malaysian Airline flight was shot down. A Ukrainian rebel was even posting a boast in social media that they shot down another Ukrainian cargo plane before his post was removed when it became apparent that the plane was a commercial flight. Russian Vladimir Putin came out with a statement that it is government at Kiev should responsible for the crash. The Ukraine intelligence came out with an audio intercept that points to the rebels as the ones firing the missile.

History

It is the second major air tragedy that the Malaysian Airlines are involved this year. Last March, MH370 vanished on its way to China.  The plane has not been found until now.  The tragedy of flight MH 17 was similar to Korean Airline Flight 007 in 1983 when 269 passengers died after the commercial plane was shot by a Soviet Su-15 near the disputed Sakhalin Island.
